Learning Experiences of M.Ed. Internship programme

Introduction

            The internship is so designed to prepare teachers not only for their roles as classroom teachers of children but also as professionals studying their own teaching practice, participating in site-based decision making and according their work with teachers and other members of the school community. Practice teaching occupies a key position in the program of teacher education. It is a culminating experience in teacher preparation. It provides opportunity to begging teachers to become socialized into the profession (Furlong et.al, 1988). Key consideration in shaping good teaching practice includes:

·         Encouraging good communication between teachers and learners.

·         Encouraging interaction among learners.

·         Providing opportunities for active participation.

·         Timely and appropriate response and feedback.

·         Emphasizing time on task.

·         Motivating learning by communicating expectations.

Internships are known for giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real world environment. At the same time, they will also develop skills which will help them to perform better at their job. Through internships, students are provided with experience that will make them stronger. In addition to this, their work ethics will increase, and they will be confident in their abilities. Internships will also allow students to learn about time management, discipline, and effective communication skills.

Objectives of the Internship

The internship program has the following purposes:

·         To get detailed knowledge of teaching field.

·         To experience the practically teaching learning process.

·         To compare the real scenario with the lessons learned.

·         To fulfill the need of student through a proper B.Ed. programme.

·         To develop the attitude towards her/his duty.

·         To provide an opportunity to evaluate students ability in learning and bring improvement in them.

·         To provide the atmosphere to make a good relationship with students.

·         To develop personal relationship with others: administrators, teachers, parents and students.

·         To provide the opportunity to become a good teacher who will create good discipline and adopt a suitable teaching method according the students needs.

·         To provide the field where they can apply all teaching learning theories to make teaching effective

·         To provide an opportunity for self-evaluation and to discover own strength and weaknesses.

·         To develop skills in future teachers related to teaching like fluent speaking, meaningful reading, using blackboard and other teaching material.

During Internship period, I gained Learning experiences

Motivation Level

Prospective teacher was trying to motivate pupil-teacher in a systematic manner. Pupil-teacher was under the prospective teacher in the classroom, during teacher training process. Prospective teacher was motivating pupil-teacher by way of giving direction in a systematic way. Prospective teacher learnt many things from pupil-teacher and students in the classroom. He also stimulated pupil-teacher to employ teaching skills like stimulus variation, reinforcement in the classroom.

Skill Level

When pupil-teacher was trying to employ teaching skills in the classroom during teaching training programme then he learns what the importance of skill is in the teaching learning process. Prospective teacher was placed as supervisor to observe and to give feedback to pupil teacher in the classroom. He also got experience by way of observing the pupil-teacher in classroom. Prospective teacher was already knew about the teaching skills how to employ in effective manner in his lesson plan. Prospective teacher got well developed experience related to teaching skills like stimulus variation, reinforcement, gestures, movement, and voice level. He also guided pupil-teacher to employ teaching skills during development of lesson by which s/he would achieve those objectives which s/he developed in her/his lesson plan.

Attitude Level

Prospective teacher has changed the attitude of the pupil teacher towards teaching learning process by way of observing them in proper manner in the classroom. Attitude is considered as inherent tendency of the prospective teacher which played very important role in teaching process. She also got experience of employing his attitude in her supervisory training in the classroom. Her attitude was satisfactory for the pupil teacher. Pupil teacher also changed her attitude towards teaching learning process in the classroom.

Behavioral Level

Prospective teacher concentrated on each and every activities of pupil-teacher which reflected behavior of the pupil-teacher in the classroom. Prospective teacher transformed his behavior according to the requirement of the teaching process the classroom. Pupil-teacher in the classroom was making her/his rapport with students by way of interacting in the classroom. It is the best way of developing behavioral activities in the classroom.

 

Confidence Level

Confidence level of prospective teacher was improving by facing the classroom in systematic manner. Supervisor was responsible for observing each and every activities of pupil-teacher in teaching learning process which developed the confidence in desirable manner. Teaching training process is the best way for both pupil-teacher and supervisor to develop confidence level.

Discipline

Discipline should be considered as self for every person according to requirements of the teaching process in the classroom. Pupil-teacher was trying to create conducive environment for suitable teaching learning for the students. This condition compelled to develop favourable discipline for both pupil-teacher and supervisor in the classroom. Supervisor learnt in well manner to create discipline in his desirable manner. Discipline play key role in teaching learning process in the classroom.

Classroom Management

This is a very challenging task for each teacher in the school. This needs a proper preparation of management skills. They are given certain point on how to maintain classroom for the creation of effective class environment. The administrative capabilities of the supervisor played key role in developing all those teaching skills which will helpful in creating conducive environment in the classroom.

Use of Teaching Aid

Teaching aids are very useful and helpful in understanding the concept. The pupil-teacher was given direction on how to use teaching-aid in the classroom and they got benefit by using it. Teaching aid is an essential component for good teaching learning because It helps in easiness of concept understanding and memory.

Application Level

Supervisor learnt all teaching skills to employ in the classroom. These skills also developed by the pupil-teacher in her/his lesson plan to employ them in desirable manner. S/he knew how to apply the teaching skills in the classroom.

Analysis Ability

Supervisor also got experience of the analysis ability during the teaching training programme. He analyzed the whole teaching training process for developing learning among students in the classroom.

Internship benefits Include:

·         Developing personally and professionally while gaining confidence and real-world experience.

·         Meeting and networking with practitioners in one’s area of interest.

·         Mentoring and performance feedback from the supervisor.

·         Earning academic credit.

Suggestions

Due to lack of resources teacher training lacks some of the aspects of teaching, but with the help of both the pupil-teacher and observer that can be removed. For this the following suggestions are given:

·         Pupil teacher need to control their emotion in the classroom.

·         Pupil teacher need to develop confidence in front of students.

·         Pupil teacher should improve his/her mastery level in subject matters.

·         Demo for preparing the teaching aids related to topics.

·         Pupil teacher will learn skills based on management of class.

·         Pupil teacher will use motivational activity in classroom.

·         It should be ensured that student teachers keep the sequence of lessons in such a way, so that they can teach all types of lessons and use different teaching methods.

Conclusion

Finally, we can say that this teaching training process was very important for both pupil-teacher and supervisor. Supervisor got lot of experience through observation of teaching training process in the classroom. Pupil-teacher also got experience in teaching learning process with the guidance of supervisor in the classroom. This is the only way of preparing strong pillar for the nation on which it stands.
